Beginning of the 2023 canyoning season
Canyoning season 2023
The canyoning season has resumed since the beginning of this month of May. To tell the truth, this year it was possible to start a little earlier, around mid-April. Indeed, the water levels at the beginning of the year were conducive to a practice from the beginning of April. Hopefully this will not have too much impact on the future season for the months of July and August. In any case and whatever happens with the water levels, it will always be possible to offer the Devil’s Canyon near Saint-Guilhem le Désert.
This year, it will not be possible to offer the Ravin des Arcs canyon. Indeed, the Lamalou, which is the river that feeds this canyon, has been dry since the beginning of spring. Unless there is a big Cévennes episode, it will unfortunately not be possible to offer this canyon this year.
So let’s take a quick tour of the canyons that may be of interest to us for this 2023 season.
The Devil’s canyon in the Hérault gorges:
Zipline at the Devil’s Canyon near Montpellier in the Hérault
This is the flagship canyon around Montpellier! Indeed, it happens to be very close to Montpellier. It will take about 30 minutes by car from the west of Montpellier, towards Saint-Guilhem le Désert.
This canyon is similar to an aquatic hike. Indeed, all the workshops can walk around each other, thus making it possible to accommodate groups of very heterogeneous levels, and thus everyone to progress according to their level and their desires.
There are jumps ranging from 1 meter to 8 meters, two abseiling descents (one of 8 meters and the other of 15 meters), a splash zip line arriving in the water and a lot of floating and swimming in white water. But for those who wish, it is possible to quietly enjoy the float ride, while watching family or friends enjoy surpassing themselves at each workshop.
The Rec Grand canyon between Montpellier and Béziers:
Canyoning at the Rec Grand in the Caroux in OccitaniaHere is one of the most fun discovery canyons that we offer, thanks to its many slides. Indeed, one could compare it to the little brother of the Llech canyon in the Pyrenees Orientales, near the Canigou massif.
This one is located near Mons la Trivalle, well known for hiking in the Héric gorges. You will evolve in a mountainous setting that is the Caroux massif, the beauty of which is breathtaking.
Given the water levels at the start of 2023, it is imperative to take advantage of this canyon now. If heavy rains no longer feed this canyon, we will no longer be able to offer it from mid-July, beginning of August. So for those who want to enjoy beautiful slides along the natural Caroux slides and some jumps up to 7 meters, it is now in May and June that you have to take advantage!
Canyon of the Orgon at the gates of the Cévennes:
Tobogganing in the Orgon canyon in the Cévennes
Here is one of the spring adventure canyons that we are very fond of. This one is near Vigan, in the south of the Cévennes. Located a good hour from Montpellier, a wild canyon awaits you. Most of the time, the guide and participants find themselves practicing without seeing other groups in the canyon.
This year, like the Rec Grand canyon, we will have to take advantage of it early in the season. Indeed, as a general rule, we stop offering this canyon at the end of June – beginning of July, because then there is not enough water for it to be interesting. But this year, it is quite possible that the water levels will no longer be interesting from mid-June, unless there are major episodes in the Cévennes which would be life-saving for the vegetation.
In this canyon, there are abseiling descents under waterfalls, jumps up to 8 meters and especially the ejectable slide of Icarus which is the flagship workshop of this canyon. You will be able to do it again at will in order to perfect your entry into the water. The first is very often to laugh out loud, especially for others.
To discover in this period of spring!
The Tapoul canyon in the heart of the Cévennes:
Canyon of Tapoul in the Cévennes is considered as the pearl of the canyon in the Cévennes, this route is undoubtedly the most beautiful canyon adventure that we offer. However, this one is worth a bit, because to get there you will have to go deep into the heart of the Cévennes National Park. Allow two hours by road from Montpellier.
This canyon brings together many workshops that can be found in the discipline. Jumps up to 9 meters, a superb splash zip line, abseiling for those who don’t want to do big jumps, passages in steep narrows, slides… In short, it’s a canyon to do at least once , for those who want to discover all the facets of canyoning.
Regarding closing days, this canyon is closed on Mondays and Fridays. And for this 2023 season, for the months of July and August, the closing day of Friday will be replaced by Sunday.
It should be possible to offer it throughout the 2023 season, but in order to be sure to enjoy it in good conditions, the months of June and July seem ideal to take advantage of correct water levels and temperatures. Notice to amateurs!
